Report of the Library Director for July 2010

New Record for Circulation – Picnic Table arrives –

Circulation for July was 6,046 items. This is a new record high for circulation; an increase from both last month (15% increase), and last year, July 2009 (3.9% increase).
6,250 items were checked out at Upton’s circulation desk, and 756 interlibrary loan requests were placed by Upton staff.
Our Laptops were checked out 40 times in July, half our circulation in June.

New Patron Registrations
26 new patrons registered in July, fewer than last month, but still over our usual average of 15-18 registrations.

Collection Development
We added approximately 68 items to our collection in July. Large orders of non-fiction titles have arrived from Sebco Books and Apple Books, but have not yet been processed for circulation.

I have completed weeding the adult fiction collection. Over 500 titles were removed from the collection completely, several hundred more were moved into storage. That should provide adequate space for another 9-12 months.
I have moved on to working on the reference collection and adult non-fiction. The majority of the reference collection will be moved to circulation, providing more space for audio-visual materials, and I will weed the adult non-fiction with the same thoroughness as the fiction.

Summer Program
464 children have registered for the Summer Program. The treasure chest has been open for five weeks, with an average of 138 children per week claiming a prize.

3 Upton residents volunteered for library day at Community Harvest Project in Grafton on July 9th.

The musical performance “Lean, Green, Clean-up Machine” had an emergency rescheduling from 2pm to 3pm on July 13th, and was attended by 36 patrons.

Picnic Table
The Picnic table has arrived and is set up on the Library lawn along Rte 140. Our wireless network provides coverage to the table, and I will encourage patrons to make use of the table. Thanks again to Unibank for funding the grant to purchase the table.

Library book group: 7 people met on July 28th.
Senior book group: 7 people met on July 6th.
Thursday storytime averaged 11 children per session. Morning session will continue, while afternoon session will not be held in July and August.
TinyTots lapsit Tinytots is not held during the summer months, the next session will start in September
Teen Tuesday was held on July 14th.
Library Table: 4 visits, averaged 9 patrons and 22 items.
