Report of the Library Director for March, 2010

Circulation increases – Staff computers upgraded to cable internet connection – No responses to newspaper usage survey – Library director to take vacation

Circulation for March was 4,574 items. This is a large increase over last month, February 2010 (14.3 %), and a tiny increase over March of 2009 (1.1%)
4,902 items were checked out at Upton’s circulation desk, and an unusually high number of 758 interlibrary loan requests were placed by Upton staff.

New Patron Registrations
18 new patrons registered in March.

Collection Development
We added approximately 146 items to our collection in March.
This is higher than normal because I spent some time processing a backlog of items that have been waiting to be entered into the catalog.
Eileen has also been working on cleaning up the backlog of items to be withdrawn, so two large piles of stuff have been removed from the library office.

There were no responses to the newspaper usage questionnaire, so I will proceed with our planned cancellation of our Boston Globe subscription.

Our magazine subscription list for FY11 is ready. I was contacted by a salesperson from Ebsco asking if they could submit a price quote for our magazines. I will wait a few weeks to receive their quote before I renew with our current vendor, Demco, but I would not consider switching vendors until Ebsco’s price quote is substantially lower. Last year we received three price quotes, of which Ebsco’s was the highest.

Staff Computer Internet Connection
The internet service for our staff computers is provided by CWMARS as part of our annual membership fee. On March 31st, they upgraded our connection from a Verizon DSL line to a Charter Cable connection. This change will not cost the library anything.
The upside of this change is that the cable connection is several times faster. The downside is that if Charter experiences an outage in Upton, we will lose access to all circulation functions, as well as our public internet services.

Library book group: 3 people met on March 31st.
Senior book group: met on March 2nd. Thanks to Eileen Rakitin for coordinating and leading this discussion.
Thursday storytime averaged 8 children per session.
TinyTots lapsit averaged 28 participants.
Teen Tuesday 25 teens visited the library on March 16th. Lisa and I held a discussion with ULTRA about the use of the teen space, and acceptable behavior guidelines.
Library Table: 4 visits, averaged 6 patrons and 13 items.

Special Events in March
Lisa read to students at Memorial School for Read Across America day on March 2nd.

No book deliveries were made by library volunteers. Several of our patrons now have a family member who is able to pick up their items at the library.

Donna Kempton has returned to work. She worked a reduced schedule for most of March, and will be returning to her full hours in April.

Matthew is taking vacation from May 17th-June 11th. We may have some difficulty in finding staff coverage for some Saturdays.

Upcoming Events in April:
April 21st – Sparky’s Puppets performance in Nipmuc Auditorium at 10:00, during school vacation week.
April 22nd – Lisa hosts outdoor storytime at Upton State Forest.

Plans for Next Month

1) Create new patron packet.

2) Housekeeping in storage area, designate more items to be withdrawn.

3) Begin plans for shifting reference collection to circulation.
